For quality improvement in polytechnic education, following measures have been taken; 
   
1) Infrastructure development of polytechnics :
a. Laboratory moderniasion & removal of obsolescence
b. Upgradation and expansion of laboratories, workshops etc.
c. Beautification of campus

2) Filling up of vacancies of different categories of teachers and staff : So far nearly 70 lecturers have been appointed through P.S.C, W.B. 334 non-PSC posts were sanctioned which shall address the issue of acute manpower shortage in polytechnics.
    
For two Craft Teachers Training Institutes of the directorate at Kalimpong and Ballygunge, posts were created and a new certificate course was introduced.

3) Faculty Development through
a. Quality Improvement Programme of AICTE
b. Allowing willing teachers for higher studies including M.E/ M.Tech., Ph.D programme
    - 34 Lecturers for 2008-09 – 2009-10

c. Short Term refresher courses though NITTTR, NIT, JU, BESU etc.
d. Tailor made training courses for emerging technologies

4) Introduction of awards to polytechnics in different categories

5) Organising Entrepreneurship Development Programme in all polytechnics 6) Career Advancement Scheme for
   Lecturers as per A.I.C.T.E announced

Increase in intake capacity from 2005-06 to 2008-09 (in%) in existing polytechnics: 44%
   
For exploring employment opportunities of the students the following measures have been / are being adopted :
   
Institute level Training & Placement Cell has been set up and is working for recruitment of students.
          
Centralized Placement Cell is functioning at the Directorate of TE&T to facilitate placement of students of all
    polytechnics.
          
Liaison with Board of Practical Training is being maintained for apprenticeship training.
          
Liaison with CII is being maintained for ascertaining, beforehand, the needs of the industries
          
Industry Institute Participation is being worked out through seminars / workshops.
          
Soft skill training programmes are being organized for students to enhance their employability.
          
Entrepreneurship Development Programme is being oraganised in all polytechnics for motivating would-be
    entrepreneurs.
          
In core fields, more than 80 % of students are getting employment. In all other fields of diploma, about 50 % is getting placement within 6 months.
   
Short-Term Vocational Training (STVT) programme
   
25 Govt aided Vocational Centres trained class X pass standard students who were otherwise directionless and looking for jobs without having definite skills were brought under the STVT programme. Emphasis was laid upon the SC and ST populations who were below 25 years of age by January of the respective year.
   
Vocational Education & Training :
   
As on date 1872 vocational centres are running skill development programme and currently have about
   2,00,000 students on roll (approx.)
          
20 Nodal Centres and through them, contractual staff have been engaged for field support and monitoring.
          
Work of Model Vocational Centre at New Town has been started by HIDCO
   
Fund utilization in 2007-08
   
In the regular polytechnic system of the state :  96% of allotted fund was utilised
In vocational education & training system       :  97.39% fund was utilised
   
The Directorate is well aware of the requirement of skilled personnel for the upcoming industries in the State. More thrust is being given on core disciplines like Metallurgy, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Automobile etc. At present, the core engineering disciplines are about 80 % of the total intake. The total intake has been increased from 9090 into 11200 in this year and most of them are in the core areas matching with the requirement of the upcoming industries. A few disciplines in service sector have also been introduced.
